The Levoit Core 300, now sold as the Core 300-P, is a small cylindrical purifier for a bedroom, nursery or home office up to about 215 sq ft. The AHAM directory lists it at 139 cfm of smoke CADR, it has no advertised ionizer and it sells for around $90 to $100 at Levoit. We’d buy it for a small room if you don’t need a sensor or an app. If you want Auto mode, the Core 300S-P covers the same size room; for a room much bigger than 200 sq ft, step up to the Vital 200S-P. This review is research-based. We didn’t run the purifier ourselves: every number below comes from Levoit’s product and filter pages, the AHAM Verifide directory, the CARB certified list and the ENERGY STAR data set. Our research method explains how we work.

One caveat on the CADR: AHAM’s directory entry for SKU LAP-C302-WUSR is labelled “Core 300S-P,” but its 53.3 W power figure matches the non-smart Core 300-P. Levoit doesn’t publish which SKU code maps to which model, so treat the mapping as likely rather than confirmed. Levoit’s own 143 cfm figure lands in the same place either way.

How much air does the Core 300 clean?

A 139 cfm smoke CADR puts the Core 300 firmly in small-room territory. AHAM’s rule of thumb asks for a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area, which gives a ceiling of roughly 208 sq ft. AHAM’s own formula (smoke CADR x 1.55) gives the 215 sq ft in its directory. Either way, think 10 x 12 ft to 12 x 17 ft rooms with standard 8 ft ceilings.

Ignore the 1,066 sq ft figure on Levoit’s page. It assumes one air change per hour, while AHAM sizes are based on about 4.8. A 1-ACH number can’t be compared with anyone else’s 4.8-ACH room size. To check your own room, plug its size into our air purifier size calculator.

Keep in mind that CADR is measured at the top fan speed. Run the Core 300 on sleep mode all night and it cleans less air than the rating suggests, so if your room is near the 215 sq ft limit, we’d size up.

Filters: what’s inside and what they cost

The Core 300 uses one cylindrical filter that combines a fine pre-filter, a main particle filter and an activated carbon layer. Levoit sells four versions:

  • Original 3-stage filter, around $30
  • Toxin Absorber 3-stage filter with Levoit’s “ARC Formula” carbon, around $36
  • Pet Allergy 3-stage filter, also with ARC Formula carbon, around $36
  • 4-Stage Smoke Remover, around $40

Three things the spec sheets don’t tell you:

  1. Whether it’s True HEPA. The AHAM directory lists the filter type as “HEPA-Type.” That term isn’t tied to the DOE definition of HEPA (99.97% at 0.3 µm), so we don’t call this filter True HEPA.
  2. How much carbon there is. Levoit publishes no carbon weight. EPA notes that thin carbon layers saturate quickly, so don’t expect heavy odor or VOC removal from any small purifier like this. Our HEPA vs carbon filter guide explains the difference.
  3. How often to replace it. Levoit’s product page gives no interval. The purifier has a Check Filter indicator, and that’s what Levoit relies on. We wouldn’t quote the “6 to 8 months” figure you’ll see elsewhere as a Levoit spec. For brand-by-brand intervals, see how often to change an air purifier filter.

Nothing on the Core 300 is washable. The pre-filter is part of the cylinder, so the whole filter gets replaced.

Running cost

AHAM measured 53.3 W at top speed. Running at top speed around the clock at the US average of 18.31 cents per kWh (EIA, July 2026), that works out to about 467 kWh and roughly $85 a year by our math. Eight hours a night at top speed would be about $28 a year. Lower speeds draw less, but neither Levoit nor AHAM publishes those figures. Try your own hours and rate in the air purifier electricity cost calculator.

The Core 300 isn’t ENERGY STAR certified. Its smart sibling, the Core 300S-P, measured 37.9 W at a similar CADR, which is worth knowing if the purifier will run all day.

Noise, controls and ozone

Levoit rates the Core 300 at 24 dB on its lowest setting and 54.5 dB on its highest. The controls are basic: three speeds, a sleep mode, a 2 to 8 hour timer and a display-off button, which matters in a bedroom. There’s no air-quality sensor, no Auto mode and no app.

On ozone, the record is mostly clean. Levoit advertises no ionizer and calls the Core 300 “Ozone Free,” and CARB certifies the “Core 300” (EO G-19-112) and “Core 300-PA” (EO G-19-119) as mechanical air cleaners. One oddity: CARB also lists SKU LAP-C302-WUSR as an “Electronic” unit with a “PlasmaPro” description (EO G-21-564), which Levoit never mentions. Electronic CARB-certified units must stay at or below 0.050 ppm of ozone. Our guide to air purifier side effects covers ionizers and ozone in more detail.

Levoit Core 300-P

The basic model is the one to get for a small bedroom or office when you just want to switch it on and leave it. You get a verified CADR, no advertised ionizer and a display you can turn off for sleep. The trade-offs are no sensor, no published filter interval and higher measured power than the 300S.

Levoit Core 300S-P

The 300S-P has nearly the same CADR (144 smoke, 223 sq ft per AHAM) but adds an AirSight Plus sensor with Auto mode, VeSync app control, schedules and Alexa or Google Assistant support. The app shows remaining filter life. Levoit rates it at 22 to 50 dB and 23 W, though AHAM measured 37.9 W at maximum smoke CADR, which is the number we’d use. It costs around $150, so you’re paying about $50 extra for the sensor and app.

One filter caveat: Levoit’s Original, Toxin Absorber and Pet Allergy filter pages list only 300-P variants as compatible, while the Smoke Remover page explicitly includes the 300S-P. Check compatibility before you order.

Levoit Core Mini-P

The Core Mini-P is a desk or nightstand unit, not a smaller Core 300. ENERGY STAR lists it at 34 cfm smoke CADR for about 53 sq ft, it draws 7 W and it’s ENERGY STAR certified. It sells for around $45 to $50. We’d only choose it for a very small space such as a home office nook or a bathroom; it won’t keep up with a full bedroom.

Levoit Vital 200S-P

If your room is bigger than about 215 sq ft, or you have pets, the Vital 200S-P is the logical step up. AHAM lists 250 cfm smoke CADR and 388 sq ft. It has a washable pre-filter for hair and lint, an infrared dust sensor with Auto mode, a Pet Mode and app control. It’s also the only model here where Levoit publishes a filter interval: 6 to 12 months. It costs around $190. Our best air purifier for pets guide compares it with other pet-friendly models.

Who the Core 300 suits, and who should skip it

Good fit:

  • A bedroom, nursery or office up to about 200 sq ft
  • Anyone who wants no ionizing stage and a display that turns off at night
  • Buyers who want a verified CADR for under $100

We’d skip it if:

  • Your room is larger than about 215 sq ft (look at the Vital 200S-P)
  • You want the purifier to adjust itself (the 300S-P has Auto mode)
  • You need serious odor or VOC removal, which calls for a lot more carbon than any small cylinder holds

Note: An air purifier can reduce airborne allergens, dust and smoke particles, but it doesn’t replace removing the source. If you’re buying for asthma or allergies, talk to your doctor about what else will help.

Our verdict

On paper, the Levoit Core 300-P does exactly what a small-room purifier should: a CADR verified by AHAM, a size claim that matches it, CARB certification as a mechanical cleaner and a low price. The weak spots are a filter AHAM calls “HEPA-Type,” no published carbon weight or replacement interval, and no sensor. In our view it’s still one of the safest under-$100 choices for a small bedroom. If you’d use Auto mode, we’d pay extra for the Core 300S-P; if your room is bigger, we’d skip both and go to the Vital 200S-P.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Levoit Core 300 still sold?

Yes. Levoit now sells it as the Core 300-P, at around $90 to $100 on levoit.com in October 2026.

What size room is the Levoit Core 300 good for?

About 215 sq ft, based on the AHAM directory's 139 cfm smoke CADR. Levoit says 222 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour. Its 1,066 sq ft claim assumes just 1 air change per hour.

Does the Levoit Core 300 have a true HEPA filter?

The AHAM directory lists its filter type as 'HEPA-Type', so we wouldn't call it True HEPA. The filter combines a fine pre-filter, a main particle filter and activated carbon.

How often should you change the Levoit Core 300 filter?

Levoit doesn't publish an interval on the Core 300-P product page. The purifier has a Check Filter indicator, so replace the filter when it comes on, or sooner if odors return.

Does the Levoit Core 300 produce ozone?

Levoit advertises no ionizer and calls it 'Ozone Free', and CARB certifies the Core 300 as a mechanical air cleaner. CARB lists one SKU code (LAP-C302-WUSR) as electronic, which Levoit's own page doesn't explain.

What is the difference between the Levoit Core 300 and Core 300S?

The 300S adds an air-quality sensor with Auto mode, VeSync app control and Alexa or Google Assistant support. Its AHAM CADR is almost the same (144 vs 139 smoke), and AHAM measured it at 37.9 W on top speed versus 53.3 W.
