Questions before you buy

Quick answers to what readers ask most about air purifiers, humidity and how we pick products.

What size air purifier do I need?

AHAM's rule of thumb is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area in square feet. A 10 x 12 ft room (120 sq ft) needs a smoke CADR of at least 80. For ceilings above 8 ft, or during wildfire smoke, choose a unit rated for a larger room.

Do air purifiers really work?

A correctly sized purifier with a true HEPA filter can reduce airborne particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke. EPA notes that no air cleaner removes every pollutant, and HEPA alone does not remove gases or odors, so look for activated carbon if smells matter and keep controlling the source and ventilating.

Do I need an air purifier, a humidifier or a dehumidifier?

They solve different problems. An air purifier removes particles, a humidifier adds moisture to dry air, and a dehumidifier removes moisture from damp air. EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%, so check your humidity before you buy.

Are air purifiers safe to run all day?

Filter-based purifiers (HEPA and carbon) are designed to run continuously. The concern is ozone: EPA advises avoiding air cleaners that produce it, including ozone generators sold as purifiers. Prefer models on the CARB certified list and switch off ionizers where the purifier allows it.

How does Clean Air Guides choose the products it recommends?

Our picks are research-based. We compare verified CADR from the AHAM directory, CARB ozone certification, ENERGY STAR data, filter costs and manufacturer specifications. We don't test products in a lab and never present research as our own test results.

How does Clean Air Guides make money?

As an Amazon Associate, Clean Air Guides earns from qualifying purchases made through links on the site, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide which products we recommend or how we rank them.
