How to Clean a Humidifier Filter: Rinse, Replace or Leave It Alone
Some humidifier wicks are made to be rinsed, others must never touch vinegar or soap. What Honeywell, Vornado, Levoit, Venta and others say, and when to replace.
By Clean Air Guides editorial teamUpdated 8 min read

How you clean a humidifier filter depends entirely on the model. Some wicks are designed to be rinsed: Levoit and Dreo tell you to rinse or clean theirs regularly. Others are throwaway parts: Honeywell says never to clean its wicking filters with vinegar, soap, bleach or chemicals, only to flip them and replace them every 30 to 60 days. So the first step is the manual. The second is simple: never use bleach on a wick unless the manual says so.
Step 1: Work out which filter you have
“Humidifier filter” covers several different parts:
- Wick filters in evaporative humidifiers: the paper, fiber or foam pad the fan blows through. This is what most people mean. Our ultrasonic vs evaporative humidifier comparison explains why only evaporative units use them.
- Small water filters and sponges in some ultrasonic and evaporative units, such as the water filter in the Levoit Classic 300S base or the filter sponge in the Levoit Superior 6000S.
- Demineralization cartridges that some ultrasonic units use to cut white dust.
- Wick-free evaporators, such as Venta’s rotating disc stacks or the evaporator in a Dyson purifier-humidifier.
Each one has its own rule, so here’s what the makers say.
Rinse or replace? What each maker says
| Brand and model | Can you wash the wick? | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell HEV685, HEV615, HEV620 | No vinegar, soap, bleach or chemicals; flip it at each refill | Every 30 to 60 days |
| Vornado EVDC500 | Vinegar soak only for new-wick odor; don’t wring | About every 4 to 8 weeks |
| AIRCARE MA1201, EP9 | No washing step; replace it | Start of each season and every 30 to 60 days |
| Levoit Superior 6000S | Yes: rinse with water and brush | About every 3 to 6 months |
| Dreo 774S | Yes: clean weekly | Every 3 months |
| Blueair DH3i (combo) | Yes: rinse weekly, citric acid soak for a deep clean | Every 6 months |
| Venta LW45 | No wick; rinse the disc stacks every 10 to 14 days | No wick to buy |
Hard water shortens every interval in this table. Honeywell, AIRCARE and Vornado all say wicks may need replacing sooner where water is hard.
How to clean a washable humidifier wick
Use these steps only for wicks the manual calls washable, such as the Levoit Superior 6000S and the Dreo 774S.
- Unplug the humidifier and lift out the tank.
- Take the wick out. Do this before you clean anything else, so no cleaner from the tank or base gets into it.
- Rinse it under running tap water. Levoit says to rinse the 6000S wicks with water and brush them.
- Use only what the manual allows for scale. Blueair’s deep clean for the DH3i wick is a 1-hour soak in citric acid, 20 g per liter of water, then a rinse under running tap water. Sharp’s KCP110UW manual allows a 30-minute soak in 2.5 cups of water with 3 teaspoons of citric acid, or 3 cups of water with 1/4 cup of pulp-free lemon juice, for its humidifying filter. Don’t borrow one maker’s method for another maker’s wick.
- Let it dry or put it back as directed. Levoit says the 6000S Dry Mode dries the wicks to prevent mold, and Dreo says Dry Mode extends the 774S wick’s life.
- Clean the tank and base separately while the wick is out. Our guide on how to clean a humidifier covers vinegar descaling and disinfecting step by step.
Note: Sharp says to rinse its humidifying filter once a month or when it starts to smell, with a maximum service life of 2 years. Combo units follow their own rules; see our picks for the best air purifier and humidifier combos.
Wicks you should not wash
Honeywell
Honeywell’s HEV685 manual says never to clean the wicking filter with vinegar, soap, bleach or chemicals. The HCM-350 manual goes further: remove the filter before you clean the humidifier, because cleaning with it in place destroys it. What Honeywell does recommend is flipping the wick top to bottom each time you refill, so it ages evenly, and replacing it every 30 to 60 days. The HEV615 and HEV620 show a Check Filter light after 30 days.
Vornado
Vornado’s EVDC500 guide says its wicks last about 4 to 8 weeks depending on use and water hardness, and to replace one when it becomes hard and no longer absorbs water. The only vinegar step is for a brand-new wick that smells: soak it in 2 teaspoons of white vinegar per gallon of water for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse without wringing. Vornado also notes that chemically softened water may harden its wicks.
AIRCARE
AIRCARE’s manuals say to change the SuperWick at the start of every season and after every 30 to 60 days of operation, more often with hard water. AIRCARE adds that only its own wicks keep the unit’s certified output, and that other brands may void the warranty. Its EP9 manual says distilled or purified water extends wick life.
Ultrasonic filters and demineralization cartridges
Ultrasonic humidifiers don’t have wicks, but some have small filters you clean along with the tank:
- Levoit Classic 300S: soak the float, water filter and noise silencer in white vinegar for 15 to 20 minutes during the weekly descale, then rinse. If mist output drops, Levoit’s troubleshooting table says to clean or replace the water filter.
- Levoit OasisMist 1000S: wash the filter on the silicone tube inside the tank with water, and soak it in vinegar for 1 hour when you descale.
- Dreo 735S: the manual says to clean the cartridge once a week by soaking it for an hour.
Demineralization cartridges are different: you replace them, you don’t clean them. HoMedics says to replace its UHE-HDC4 cartridge every 30 to 40 fillings, sooner with very hard water or when white dust increases, and to soak a new one in water for 10 minutes before installing it. EPA cautions that how well these cartridges remove minerals may vary widely, and that white dust is a sign they aren’t keeping up. Our guide to what water to use in a humidifier explains when distilled water is the better fix.
Wick-free designs: Venta and Dyson
Venta’s LW45 uses a stack of rotating discs instead of a wick. Its manual says to rinse the lower housing and disc stacks with warm water every 10 to 14 days. For scale, soak the discs for about 30 minutes in hot water with Venta Cleaner or white vinegar (50:50 or 3:1 vinegar to water). The disc stacks and housing can go in a dishwasher on a cool or rinse cycle, but not with dishes. Venta says not to use detergent, mild soap, bleach or household cleaners.
Dyson’s purifier-humidifiers use an evaporator that you descale with the machine’s Deep clean cycle, using 150 g of citric acid in the tank, then rinse under a cold tap. The Venta LW45 is one of the picks in our best evaporative humidifier roundup.
Signs a wick is spent
Replace the wick, rather than trying to clean it, when you see any of these:
- It’s hard or stiff and no longer soaks up water (Vornado).
- It’s brown or rust-colored and crusty. Honeywell says the color is mineral deposit, and that scale can clog a filter.
- It’s moldy or smells off. Honeywell says to replace it. If you’re also finding slime in the tank, see our guide to mold in a humidifier.
- The tank level isn’t dropping. Honeywell’s HCM-350 manual says to check that the wick is wet when the water level doesn’t go down over 24 hours.
- The filter light is on. The Honeywell HEV620, Levoit Superior 6000S and Dreo 774S all have a filter reminder.
Mayo Clinic advises replacing filters at least as often as the manufacturer recommends. We’d treat the maker’s interval as the latest point, not a target, if your water is hard.
Why we’d skip bleach on a wick
Bleach shows up in plenty of humidifier manuals, but in the Honeywell, Vornado and AIRCARE manuals it’s for the tank or base, not the wick. All three use 1 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water for disinfecting, and Honeywell’s manuals say to do it with the filter removed. If your manual doesn’t mention bleach for the wick, don’t use it. CPSC says that if you use bleach or any other cleaner, rinse the tank well so you don’t breathe the chemicals when the unit runs.
Important: Never mix vinegar and bleach. Honeywell tells you to descale and disinfect as separate steps to avoid harmful chemical interactions.
Make your wicks last longer
- Change the water daily. EPA says to empty, wipe dry and refill portable humidifiers every day.
- Flip or dry the wick. Flip a Honeywell wick at each refill; use Dry Mode on Levoit and Dreo models.
- Use lower-mineral water. AIRCARE says distilled or purified water extends wick life, and Vornado notes that chemically softened water may harden its wicks.
- Don’t over-humidify. Keep the room at or below 50%, as EPA advises.
- At the end of the season, EPA says to discard used cartridges, cassettes and filters, dry every part and store the unit dry. AIRCARE says to throw out the wick too.
For the day-to-day routine of filling and placing a unit, see how to use a humidifier.
Replacement wicks by part number
Buy the part your manual names. These are the numbers in the makers’ documents:
- Honeywell HEV685: HC14 wicking filter
- Honeywell HEV615 and HEV620: HFT600 wicking filter
- Vornado EVDC500: MD1-0034 wick
- AIRCARE MA1201: MAF1 SuperWick
Frequently asked questions
Can you wash a humidifier filter?
Only if the manual says so. Levoit's Superior 6000S wicks can be rinsed with water and brushed, and Dreo says to clean the 774S wick weekly. Honeywell says never to clean its wicking filters with vinegar, soap, bleach or chemicals; replace them instead.
Can I clean a humidifier wick with vinegar?
Not a Honeywell wick: its HEV685 manual rules out vinegar. Vornado suggests soaking a new wick in 2 teaspoons of white vinegar per gallon of water for 20 to 30 minutes to cut a new-wick odor. For other models, follow the manual.
Can you put bleach on a humidifier filter?
Not unless your manual says so. Honeywell says never to use bleach on its wicking filters. In the Honeywell, Vornado and AIRCARE manuals, bleach is only for disinfecting the tank or base, at 1 teaspoon per gallon of water, with the wick removed.
How often should you replace a humidifier filter?
It depends on the model and your water. Vornado says about 4 to 8 weeks, Honeywell and AIRCARE every 30 to 60 days, Dreo every 3 months for the 774S, Blueair every 6 months and Levoit about 3 to 6 months for the Superior 6000S.
Why is my humidifier wick brown or hard?
Honeywell says brown or rust-colored discoloration is mineral deposit, and Vornado says to replace a wick when it turns hard or stops absorbing water. Hard water speeds this up.
Can a humidifier filter go in the dishwasher?
Usually not. Honeywell says no part of the HEV685 goes in a dishwasher. Venta is an exception: its wick-free disc stacks can go in on a cool or rinse cycle, without dishes.
